Course Description: AP English Language and Composition
For most students, this course will be a first taste of college-level work and as such will demand college-level effort and dedication from us all. To succeed on this level, one must become a critical reader and an effective writer. A critical reader is able to read deeply in order to figure out not only what an author is saying, but how an author achieves his or her purpose through writing. An effective writer is able to use language in a conscious and crafted way to achieve that purpose.
Students should expect to spend an average of 45 minutes to an hour of preparation time per class period, which will include a significant amount of writing.
Some of the important elements of this class are: assigned reading, supplemental reading, personal dictionaries, journals, the Junior Research Paper (JRP) and preparation for the AP Exam.
