Course Description: English 10 Honors
English 10 Honors is the first course in the accelerated curriculum of the English Department. As such, it is designed to lay the foundations necessary for success in the eleventh and twelfth grade accelerated courses (AP English Language and AP English Literature, respectively). Both of these courses are designed to develop mastery of interaction with academic and literary English. Whether students choose to take AP courses in English, the curricula of those courses represent what any advanced student of English should be focused on:
- careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature;
- deeper understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers;
- consideration of a work’s structure, style, and themes as well as such smaller-scale elements as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone;
- awareness of the interactions among a writer’s purposes, audience expectations, and subjects;
- awareness of the way generic conventions and the resources of language contribute to effectiveness in writing.
