Course Description: AP U.S. History

This course is designed to give students a college-level experience in American history, while preparing them for the AP U.S. History Exam in May 2012. While students will be responsible for mastering a large body of historical content, the emphasis of the course will be on document analysis, historical thinking, and historical writing. As this class is designed to take the place of an undergraduate history course, students will be required to take responsibility for their own learning to a much greater degree than they have likely done in previous courses. This includes outside research and reading, as well as working in study groups throughout the year. Course materials will explore a number of themes in American history; however, the guiding theme of the course will be freedom – an idea that has been redefined and contested throughout America’s history.
