Course Description: AP Environmental Science
This course is designed for students especially interested in the study of environmental science. It is taught at the college level and text work is supplemented with many labs and activities. Successful completion of this course implies a readiness to pass the Advanced Placement Exam in May. The course focuses on the interactions that exist between the ecosystems of the earth, governed by biological and physical laws, and human activities. A detailed examination of ecology forms the foundation of the course. This is followed by studies of human population growth, resource use, air quality and composition, water quality and availability, soil quality and agriculture, and the interactions between humans and the other living organisms on the planet. Students taking this course should be self-motivated, energetic, and prepared to learn. Such students will leave this class knowing how to apply scientific and socioeconomic principles, mathematical models, historic events, and their own personal value systems to very real local and global challenges.
