Course Description: Applied Guitar/Guitar Ensemble

Through the study and performance of a historically representative selection of music arranged for guitar and guitar ensemble, students will gain knowledge of the evolution of styles, genres and social/cultural roles the guitar worldwide, as well as the musical skills, both theoretical and technical, required to gain proficiency and perform the music. Through the in-depth study of guitar, students will gain insight into artistic processes (creativity, pursuit of mastery) and their relationship to cultural/academic study at large, while also developing crucial communicative, critical, and analytical abilities.
 
Applied Guitar/Guitar Ensemble - Classical
The Classical option of this course (offered every alternate year) focuses on classical technique, sight reading and repertoire. Students will perform the works of great composers in both solo and ensemble settings. All music will be in manuscript form. A nylon string, classical guitar is required. There are no prerequisites or auditions required. 

Applied Guitar/Guitar Ensemble - Modern
The Modern segment of this course (offered every alternate year) focuses on American blues and the subsequent evolution of modern music, primarily jazz and rock, as well as the underlying theory. Acoustic and/or electric guitars are acceptable. There are no prerequisites or auditions required.
 

Open to all levels of experience. May be repeated.
