Course Description: History 10
This course will introduce students to a range of themes in world history since the eighteenth century, with a focus on interaction among groups and cultures. Connections between societies often involve various types of contact, including trade and cultural exchange, but also conquest and exploitation. Some of the themes we will engage include the Atlantic slave trade and its impact on Africa, Enlightenment ideas and revolution, industrialization and imperialism, nationalism and WWI, WWII and genocide, the Cold War and decolonization, and selected topics in modern Middle Eastern history.
Primary source analysis is a central part of the skills that students will develop in this course. In addition, students will learn how to assess historians’ interpretations of history, and they will argue their own interpretations in research projects, writing, and discussions. As students learn to analyze various types of sources and construct their own arguments, they will enhance critical thinking skills that they will need in college and beyond.
