Course Description: Spanish 4
Spanish IV is not only designed to solidify and reinforce those skills students have built on during the first three levels of Spanish, but also, to expand their knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and Spanish-speaking cultures. The course instruction and the assigned class work will address all four aspects of language acquisition: oral communication, listening comprehension, writing proficiency, and reading comprehension.
This class aims to build students’ abilities through language immersion; and for that reason, class will be conducted in Spanish. As language immersion is extremely crucial in acquiring any foreign language, many of the in-class activities will consist of expressing vocabulary/phrases both verbally and physically (acting). Whether the in-class activities require a single student or a small group, all activities will seek to create a fun, confident-building environment to practice the skills that they have learned. This will increase students’ reading comprehension as well as give them the comfort to converse in the Spanish language outside the classroom with their fellow classmates.
El presente, el imperfecto, le pretérito, el futuro, el subjuntivo presente y pasado, el condicional, y los tensos progresivos, are the tenses that will be taught in Spanish IV. In-class writing assignments, such as a journal entries and/or group-formulated dialogues which will be performed in class, are methods that will be used to gain a higher knowledge of each tense and its usage. These activities along with an individual project/presentation will strengthen students’ research, writing, and oral communication skills.
At end of the school year, students should have a high knowledge of the language and its culture. They should feel comfortable using the phrases and vocabulary assigned throughout the year in daily conversation with Spanish speakers, and also, be able to discuss topics such as, education, technological advancement, environmental issues, and Spanish-speaking cultures.
